Columbus day event draws supporters and protesters in Pueblo

Alaska just made the switch to Indigenous Peoples' Day previous year, and cities like Los Angeles, Seattle and Ithaca, New York, have done the same.

"It was far more brutal than we had known", Consuelo Varela, a historian and author of the book The Fall of Columbus has said. In blue states especially, communities now recognize Columbus as a slaveholder, rapist and plunderer of gold; a total of 56 cities and four states have followed Berkeley's example.

Instead, city officials have chosen instead to celebrate another federal holiday, Veteran's Day on November 12, a day during which the city normally remains open because it would require a paid holiday for all city employees.

"Columbus is home to 110,000 veterans", Davis said in an email to NPR.

Most colleges and schools around the country are closed on Columbus Day.

Today, Columbus Day is not celebrated at all.

This year, adding to the growing list of cities reluctant to celebrate that sort of history and choosing to instead observe Indigenous Peoples' Day are such geographically and ideologically diverse areas as San Francisco, Cincinnati, Boise, South Fulton in Georgia and Mankato, Minnesota.

At least 11 dead after 5.9 magnitude quake in Haiti
In 2010, a 7.1 magnitude natural disaster rocked the country, killing between 200,000 and 300,000 people, according to estimates. Overall, around five million people were displaced by the quake when it struck the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

Columbus Day, which falls on the second Monday of October, is one of 10 federal holidays recognized by the USA government.

The idea of changing the traditional holiday has often sparked intense disagreements. "The fact that the city of Columbus is taking action is a victory for everyone".

By now, you probably know Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. "How stupid of Mayor Ginther to perpetrate this embarrassment for our City!"

I suggest we revise our nation's origin story by forcing ourselves to see it more clearly. City leaders changed the holiday a few years ago after concerns about Christopher Columbus's treatment of native people.

Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since the 1930s, but as of 2015, less than half of US states had moved to give their employees a paid day off on the day.

Critics of Columbus complain that the holiday mythologizes a man blamed for bringing slavery and death to the "New World".
