Nikki Haley resigns as United Nations ambassador, Trump accepts

United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, who stunned Washington with her surprise announcement she is resigning her post, was facing an ethics complaint over her acceptance of private travel between SC and Washington, D.C.

He called Ms Haley a "very special" person, adding that she told him six months ago that she might want to take some time off.

At least that's what CNN was speculating as President Trump confirmed Haley's resignation on Tuesday, adding that she would leave the post at the end of the year to "take a break". Nevertheless, the announcement surprised many in the Trump administration.

Some have reported that her resignation was prompted by her aspirations to run for President. She spoke out against racism and on issues of gender. "And I think we heard from them prior to the election".

Haley, on a filing required of government employees, disclosed the flights from NY to SC and Washington and estimated the highest value at $1,066, based on the cost of commercial first-class tickets. She said she would be supporting Trump. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.

I am saddened that she is leaving the administration, but so grateful for her service.

"I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country", Haley wrote. He intends to name Haley's successor within the next two to three weeks.

Critics of Columbus complain that the holiday mythologizes a man blamed for bringing slavery and death to the "New World". City leaders changed the holiday a few years ago after concerns about Christopher Columbus's treatment of native people.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow suggested she had got "ahead of the curve" and had a "momentary confusion".

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Haley's leaving is "yet another sign of the Trump administration's chaotic foreign policy and setback from promoting American values and priorities".

The resignation comes just a day after a watchdog group said Haley may have committed an ethics violation by accepting tens of thousands of dollars in flights from SC businessmen who contributed to her gubernatorial campaign. "Look at what has happened in two years with the United States on foreign policy".

With speculation already building about her political future, she quickly denied any plans to challenge her boss in 2020, instead saying in the Oval Office on Tuesday (Oct 9) it was "time to stand aside".

In December 2017, she said that women who had accused Mr Trump of sexual assault "should be heard".

Haley's ability to speak eloquently and forcefully on contentious issues fueled much speculation that she has political ambitions beyond the United Nations, possibly including a White House run.

In a tweet, the president teased a "big announcement" Tuesday morning and referred to Haley as his "friend".
