Court mood is jovial as Kavanaugh takes his place on bench

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford has been nominated for a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Distinguished Alumna and Alumnus award.

Three weeks preceding the confirmation vote, Ford accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a suburban Washington house party more than three decades ago when both were teenagers.

As Kavanaugh won't vote in any cases prior to his tenure, these votes could end in a 4-4 tie, leading to either a reinstatement of the lower court ruling or a retrial with Kavanaugh.

Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was strikingly at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his high court confirmation.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain you have been forced to endure", Mr Trump said on Monday (Oct 8) during a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House.

Justice Kavanaugh was joined at the ceremony by his wife and two daughters.

"He started it with an apology on behalf of the country and a curious proclamation", Kimmel described, of Trump declaring in the East Room that his new Supreme Court justice had been "proven innocent". He claimed he was the first justice to have an all-female staff. As Hasen also suggests, that majority could be more likely to strike down nonpartisan map-drawing commissions, a tool for countering gerrymandering of congressional districts that Kennedy had voted to uphold (and which Kavanaugh might not).

Antonio Brown sued after throwing items from condo balcony
Brown has until Thursday to respond to Sternberg's lawsuit after filing for an extension in September. Both lawsuits were filed in Miami-Dade County in August and seek more than $15,000 in damages.

The president also told reporters on Monday morning that he thinks many Democrats will vote Republican in next month's midterm elections because they are angry about Kavanaugh's treatment. And pundits presumed POTUS meant to take a victory lap after his nominee got the Senate's stamp of approval by a slim 50-48 margin following a very divisive confirmation battle, in which Kavanaugh faced multiple sexual misconduct allegations, but especially that he had sexually assaulted Ford when he was in high school.

Trump has repeatedly said that putting conservatives on the court - Kavanaugh is his second appointment - was among the top goals of his presidency.

Kavanaugh was confirmed 50-48 Saturday after a bitter Senate battle.

"The reality is, right now, Republicans control the House and the Senate, and there's no way to do even an investigation unless we flip one of the houses", replied Booker, a Democrat seen as a potential presidential candidate in 2020.

Kavanaugh will hear his first Supreme Court case, a day after President Trump swore in his nominee. Justice Kavanaugh took the two required oaths privately at the court last Saturday, letting him begin work right away.

The Supreme Court is declining to review an environmental ruling written by Brett Kavanaugh in his former role as an appeals court judge.

But after being sworn in, Kavanaugh struck a markedly more conciliatory tone.
