Israel PM´s wife goes on trial in delivery meals case

The trial of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife for misuse of public funds opened Sunday in Jerusalem.

It is noted that the defendant was accused of embezzlement of budget funds in the amount of 100 thousand dollars on the star chefs at the official residence of the Prime Minister. Mrs Netanyahu has also been a high profile and dogged presence alongside her husband.

Mrs. Netanyahu appeared before the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court wearing a dark jacket and white shirt, her hair coiffed into curls.

Sara Netanyahu has in the past said that her "blood has been spilled publicly".

In front of the residence, protesters gathered with a large banner bearing Netanyahu's face and the words "crime minister" and chanting slogans calling for justice.

Sara Netanyahu was charged with fraud and breach of trust in June.

The indictment is one of a series of scandals encircling the prime minister and his family, and threatening to solidify their reputation as overindulgent and out of touch with the Israeli people.

The prime minister, who himself is embroiled in corruption investigations, has called the allegations against his wife absurd and unfounded. Where cooks are not employed, the prime minister's family is permitted to order external meals, up to a maximum cost of NIS 200 per person plus tax. Netanyahu spoke with Putin prior to Sunday morning's government cabinet meeting. In 2016, a court ruled she abused an employee and awarded the man $42,000 in damages.

Police, meanwhile, interviewed Mr Netanyahu for the twelfth time last week as a suspect in his own corruption cases.

Earlier media reported that Sarah Netanyahu complains about the quality of food and employees roughly criticize the residence, using humiliating words.

Another case involves suspicions that the premier and his family received luxury gifts from wealthy individuals in exchange for financial or personal favours.

The date for the meeting between Benjamin Netanyahu and Vladimir Putin has yet to be decided, reports Efe news. The police have recommended that Mr Netanyahu be indicted, though Israel's Attorney General has not yet decided how he will proceed.
