Ousted Guardians of the Galaxy director switches camps, tied to new DC Comics film

Fired Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is reportedly "in talks" to write and possibly direct Suicide Squad sequel - crossing over from the Marvel Comics universe to the DC Comics universe. The big question here is whether the cast of Ayer's Suicide Squad - namely Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as the Joker - will be in the Gunn-penned Suicide Squad film.

Gunn isn't the first Marvel Studios alum to work with DC and Warner Bros.

The first Suicide Squad film, which was released in 2016 and directed by David Ayer, received mixed reviews, but did earn almost $750 million worldwide - massive in comparison to its $175 million budget, before promotion and advertising.

The most tantalizing news is a confirmation that Gunn is "in discussions to write, with an eye to direct", whatever Suicide Squad film comes next.

'What are we, some kinda suicide squad reboot?'

Gunn was dismissed from writing/directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3 earlier this year after a concentrated online campaigned publicized a series of tasteless jokes he made years ago about rape and pedophilia on Twitter.

Suicide Squad, like Guardians, was a superhero team-up movie with an ensemble cast of less-than-heroic characters. The sequel has been slow to get started, however - it's already been through at least one potential director in The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor.

"My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative", said Gunn. The film has always been in development with Warrior director Gavin O'Connor previously set to write and direct Suicide Squad 2 with Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith returning.
