Taylor Swift statement inspires voter registration surge

After 24-hours and almost two million Instagram likes later, Vote.org said Tennessee voter registration jumped 65,000 in a day. By comparison, the group said 56,669 new voters registered in August and 190,178 registered in September.

Swift has more than 112 million followers on Instagram, where on Sunday she criticized Tennessee Senate candidate and GOP Rep. After her post went up, encouraging fans to go to vote.org, the site saw more than 155,000 unique visitors in a 24-hour period. Guthrie reports that vote.org has received a total of 5,183 registrations in the state to date - 2,144 of which came in during the last 36 hours. As of noon Tuesday, less than 48 hours after Swift's post, more than 169,000 new people had registered on the site to vote, said spokeswoman Kamari Guthrie on Tuesday.

Swift broke her silence on politics Sunday, explaining she will not support Republican representative Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee's Senate race because, "her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me".

Kirk says that the "proper" thing to do would have been to have some "neutrality" in her post, and simply encourage people to register to vote.

Swift's comments got 1.5 million likes on her Instagram page.

Swift's move will have no lasting impact if the candidates she endorses, and dozens of others around the country, fail to act on issues that are personal and meaningful to her fan base.
