Trump hosts Kavanaugh for ceremonial swearing

New Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is returning to the White House for a televised appearance Monday with President Donald Trump less than a month before pivotal congressional elections.

He tried to distinguish between Mr Trump's nomination of Mr Kavanaugh this year and his own decision not to have the GOP-run Senate consider president Barack Obama's high court nominee, Merrick Garland, in 2016. "We wish you a long and happy career in our common calling".

Kavanaugh, whose bid to join the top United States court almost failed after a California professor accused him of assaulting her when they were in high school, said he would enter his new job without bitterness despite a political fight that he told lawmakers had destroyed his family and his name.

Kavanaugh was administered the official Constitutional Oath and Judicial Oath by Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy shortly after being confirmed by the Senate. That shift delights judicial conservative who believe the confirmation will be one of Trump's most lasting legacies.

Conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch joined the court previous year. Kennedy was a more moderate conservative who sometimes sided with the court's four liberal justices.

The misconduct complaints concern Kavanaugh's answers about his work in the George W. Bush administration and his comments about Democrats using allegations of sexual assault against him, according to the Post.

His attempt to frame his apology to Kavanaugh as coming on behalf of the entire nation also overlooks public antipathy toward the nominee. Instead, the former D.C. Circuit judge missed the first week of arguments as the Senate considered an allegation that he had sexually assaulted a woman in high school, an allegation he adamantly denied.

"The Senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional", Kavanaugh said. He noted that his newly hired law clerks were all women, which he said was a historic first at the Supreme Court.

The appeals were brought by an environmental group and companies that supported the rule, which had limited hydrofluorocarbons used in a variety of products including spray cans and air conditioners.

Trump also tweeted that previous evening had been a "great" night at the White House honoring Justice Kavanaugh. Some Democrats have talked of impeaching Kavanaugh, though the process is hard with a two-thirds Senate majority required to remove a federal judge.

"Those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception", Trump said.

Trump, who drew criticism for mocking Ford at a rally, said Kavanaugh had been cleared. The other eight justices were all in attendance. That doesn't mean that much of the anger and passion was inorganic, mind you, but the Professional Left clearly had a hand in shaping the optics - knowing exactly what sort of made-for-TV displays their allies in the mainstream media would eat up.
