'Embarrassing': Yanks routed by Red Sox 16-1, trail ALDS 2-1

Angel Hernandez's umpiring didn't get any better Tuesday night - at least not as far as one New York Yankees player was concerned. Boston did so with class, pure joy and a hint of pettiness.

Nine thoughts on the Red Sox' Division Series-clinching 4-3 victory over the Yankees.

Aaron Judge walked past Boston's Fenway Park clubhouse early Sunday morning, Frank Sinatra's rendition of "New York, New York" blaring from a boom box atop the wheelie bag he was pulling with his left hand. And everything else went Boston's way all night, so why not this? I was trying to hit a home run. Just, I don't know.

Shortly before the game began, TBS aired footage of Severino going down to the Yankees bullpen 10 minutes before the game, throwing his first pitch off the mound at 7:32, or eight minutes before he was due on the real mound for. "I don't know, man", Cora said. "So it just turned into a really bad inning for us", Boone said.

Boston leads 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Don't know about you, but after this, my nerves will be ready for another Red Sox-Yankees series in, oh, about 14 years. Perhaps most surprisingly, he gave Vazquez a second straight start behind the plate instead of Sandy Leon, even thoughVazquez hadn't caught Porcello all season.

For all the focus on big boppers, J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts and Andrew Benintendi for Boston, and Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Gary Sanchez for NY, relievers have reigned in an era when starting pitchers often are shown the exit before they have a chance to stumble too much.

Red Sox: 1B Mitch Moreland sat out after leaving Game 2 when he hurt his right hamstring running the bases. Tuesday night's clincher featured five solid innings by starter Rick Porcello, three ideal innings from three setup men - including ace Chris Sale in an eighth-inning cameo - and a harrowing ninth from closer Craig Kimbrel, who needed a breath of wind at the outfield wall, a clutch pitch or three and an anticlimactic replay review to secure a messy save. "That's it", Price said after his ALDS start.

"He was more emphatic about wanting to be in there tonight", Boone said, referring to Hicks.

Porcello needed only 25 pitches to get through New York's lineup the first time and entered the fifth inning with only 40 pitches. In his three previous playoff starts - 1998 ALCS, 1998 World Series, 1999 ALDS - the right-hander had allowed just one run and 11 hits in 22 innings, for a tidy 0.41 ERA. Gary Sanchez crushed a double (are we sure this guy hit.186 this year?), and after an 89-foot infield single by Torres, Brett Gardner brought in Sanchez for the Yankees first run.

Or did they want to keep it as is seeing he only threw 15 pitches and risk it in their biggest game of the year? The Yankees, who set a major league record with 267 homers this season, were held without one for the first time in four games this postseason, falling to 10-22 in 2018, regular and postseason combined, when failing to homer.
