World's longest flight from Singapore to NY takes off

An Airbus jetliner arrived in Newark on Friday after a almost 18-hour trip from Singapore, completing the world's longest commercial flight.

Singapore Airlines is the first carrier in the world to operate the A350-900ULR.

SIA's two-class plane for SQ22 offers 67 seats in business class and 94 in premium economy for the 19-hour flight. "We are mainly anxious about cases of deep vein thrombosis" that can be caused by long-standing passengers and dehydration, said Gheel Kro, a consultant at Singapore's National University Hospital.

The Singapore-Newark route will top Qatar Airways' Doha-Auckland route as the world's longest, but Australia's Qantas Airways is considering the introduction of an even longer 20-hour Sydney-London flight from 2022.

The trophy is now held by Qatar Airways on its Auckland-Doha service with a nominal flight time of just over 18 hours and a distance of 14,535kms (9.032 miles) using a Boeing 777-200LR.

That particular service was axed when high fuel prices, among other factors, made it unsustainable.

It's likely those who booked from India were looking forward to flying an aircraft with no economy class seats.

Starting Thursday, the route between Changi Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey will be served three times a week.

But if you're not fussed about all that, you can still order a rib-eye steak or a burger through the airline's "Book The Cook" system.

Facing increasingly strong competition in recent years, Singapore Airlines has consolidated its low-fare subsidiaries and is strengthening its premium segment.

The flight will have a 13-member cabin crew and each of the members will get a 4-hour rest period during the flight. When they land in NY, pilots have three nights off before flying back to Singapore. Ticket sales for this flight were opened only about two months ago and we expect more bookings in the coming months, " Lim said.

The Singapore Airline said that the dining options will be included dishes that have been chosen to promote well-being in the air, with organic food items on the menu. The revamped model consumes 25 per cent less fuel than aircraft of a similar size and performance, according to Maria Luisa Lucas Ugena, Airbus's head of A350 product marketing.

The cabins in the plane have higher than the normal ceilings, larger windows than the normal and lighting created to reduce jet lag. The A340-500s that plied the route until 2013 had 58,870 gallons for only 100 customers.
