Even before Jamal Khashoggi's suspected death, the Trump administration had been under pressure to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia over its catastrophic war on Yemen, which has killed thousands of people, pushed millions of Yemenis to the brink of starvation and sparked the world's worst cholera outbreak, with as many as 10,000 new cases of cholera appearing every week.

The spokesman of Erdogan's ruling party, Omer Celik, acknowledged Saturday that there were "extremely sensational claims" about Khashoggi's fate in the media and said there would be "severe consequences" for anyone found responsible if they were true.

Mr Khashoggi is believed to have turned on the recording feature before he went inside the building on 2 October to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

Turkish sources allege he was killed by a 15-strong team of Saudi agents.

Turkish and foreign media who have camped outside the consulate all week noticed the motorcade arriving on Friday but it had not been immediately clear who were the Saudi personnel entering the consulate were.

Khashoggi was last seen October 2 entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to handle paperwork needed for his planned marriage.

Saudi stocks plunged 7 percent just an hour after trading opened Sunday as the oil-rich kingdom comes under increasing global pressure over the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Experts have dismissed claims that a recording of the alleged killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi may have been transmitted using his Apple Watch.
