Passengers Ready For World's Longest Flight

Singapore Airlines restarted their direct service between Singapore and NY and completed its first longest non-stop flight from Singapore to NY on Friday.

Singapore Airlines is flying the new Airbus A350-900ULR (ultra long range) on the route. The passengers will be offered a special "wellness" menu comprising organic dishes, specially designed for long haul flights, as well as over 1,200 hours of audio-visual entertainment to choose from.

Shortly before take-off, SIA posted online: "Counting down to the launch of our non-stop flight to NY on the Airbus A350 Ultra Long Range!" Mood lighting will also be used throughout the flight to help encourage sleep when needed and adjusting to new time zones, helping to combat jet lag. For, the Singapore-Newark flight will be the world's longest flight when it is relaunched on October 11.

On the return, Singapore Airlines flight SQ21 will depart Newark at 10:45 a.m. and arrive the following day in Singapore at 5:30 p.m. It is said that the business class seats for the flight were fully booked with "limited number of premium economy seats" left. The aircraft has the capability to fly 11,160 miles which is 1,800 miles more than the standard A350. Such flight was stopped operating in 2013.

Still, this is something new (those reviews of the A350-900 were for eight or nine hour flights). When they land in NY, pilots have three nights off before flying back to Singapore. The 13-strong cabin crew will get at least four hours rest during the flight and two days to enjoy NY before the return leg. The journey will be a mammoth 16,700 kilometers lasting just under 19 hours, making it the longest commercial flight worldwide in terms of both distance and time.

Airbus says the A350-900ULR offers the longest range of any commercial airliner in service today.

Possibly thousands of people are buried in areas where the force of the quake liquefied the soil and sucked houses into the earth. An estimated 80,000 people were displaced by the disaster, many squatting in tents outside their destroyed homes.

A one-way ticket from Singapore to NY on this flight costs about US$2,150 (70,000 baht) in premium economy and $3,500 for a roundtrip itinerary, according to the Singapore Airlines website.

"We really are entering a new era of travel".

Actually, I'm just realizing that all of the hype about this being the world's longest flight that I've been reading about for two days is actually a fib.

Singapore Airlines is the first company in the world to operate Airbus' A350-900ULR.

"Even though it costs more for an airline to fly over a hub, they'll always charge you less because of the disadvantage of going via somewhere else".
