Cologne 'hostage situation': German police swoop on train station

RPT police said a hostage was taken at Breslauer Platz, a major square near the busy train station.

Around the time of the incident, a teenage girl was taken from the train station to the hospital with injuries, police spokesman Christoph Schulte said.

Police quoted by the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger daily said a couple were involved, and the man had argued with the woman in a McDonald's restaurant, before holding her in a pharmacy at the station.

Cologne police closed parts of the western German city's main train station for a couple hours on Monday as a hostage situation played out. Emergency personnel were trying to revive him with CPR.

The police said in a subsequent tweet that there had been no shots fired and there were no immediate reports of casualties. The hostage was also slightly injured and treated on the scene.

Heavily armed police now surround the station, which has been evacuated and closed off to the public.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted earlier that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily and trains were being canceled or delayed. Local media reported that people were told via a loudspeaker to leave the station.
