Pakistan executes man for raping, killing 7-year-old girl

He was facing charges in the cases of at least seven other children attacked, five of whom he murdered.

"I have seen his awe-inspiring end with my own eyes", he told reporters.

On February 17, an anti-terrorism court had sentenced him to death on four counts.

In a swift justice, the authorities in Pakistan executed the man, who raped seven-year-old Zainab Fatima Ameen in Pakistan in January this year, on Wednesday morning.

Zainab was found dead on January 9, 2017 in Kasur district near Lahore several days after her disappearance.

Earlier, an appeal for the public hanging of Imran Ali was dismissed by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday.

Zainab's father, Mohammed Amin Ansari, was allowed to witness the execution, and thanked the judiciary, government and investigators for delivering speedy justice.

The murder had sparked country-wide protests, mounting pressure on the police to start investigation and arrest the culprit.

Aksyonov denied those details however, saying there had been no gunfire and the situation in Kerch was generally calm. An explosion hit a Polytechnic College in Kerch, TASS reports citing a source in the emergency services.

After the execution, Ali's family, guarded by police personnel, took his body to Kasur.

It showed a girl being led away by a man. The hashtag #JusticeForZainab later went viral, with many Pakistanis calling for action.

The rape and murder of Zainab Ansari was the 12th such case in Kasur district in 2017.

On January 23, authorities had claimed to have apprehended Imran - a serial killer involved in other similar crimes - through a DNA match.

His appeals against the verdict failed and earlier in October President Arif Alvi rejected a plea for clemency.

Relatives, not police, had recovered CCTV footage of her last movements. He admitted to raping eight boys and girls, and to killing six of them, according to police.

But now that Zainab's tormentor has gone to the gallows, one is reminded of the sad reality that not much was ever done after those initial statements of intent.
