Benavidez did have some success in the fourth, but Crawford took control after the halfway point and was well ahead on the cards by the time the fight reached the 12th.

After a highly contentious lead up to the fight, the first six rounds were close.

Crawford improved to 12-0 in world title fights with one of his most emphatic knockouts.

The 31-year-old Crawford (34-0, 25 knockouts), ranked first or second on the world's top pound-for-pound fighter lists, put on a workmanlike performance for the first half of the fight in front of a hometown crowd of 13,000 that included Crawford friend and billionaire Warren Buffett. The crowd was the largest that Crawford has drawn to date and he gave the hometown fans a show. Crawford retaliated with a ridiculously fast punch but missed Benavidez, who leaned back to duck the shot. Crawford enters the bout now ranked as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Fact check: Donald Trump's claims versus climate science
Scientists say that natural fluctuations in temperature are being exacerbated by human activity - which have caused approximately 1C of global warming above pre-industrial levels.

Crawford and Benavidez had bickered throughout the run-up to Saturday's fight, with Crawford taking a wild swing at his rival on Friday at the weigh-in after initially being shoved.

So what's next for the rising welterweight star Terence Crawford? It feels so good to shut somebody up who's been talking for so long.

"We knew that he wanted to get in my head and make it a firefight", Crawford said.

There was no doubt a brief moment of panic amongst those looking forward to tonight's welterweight title showdown as things became tense when the two fighters scheduled to compete stood eye-to-eye.
