Pompeo to meet Saudi king over Khashoggi

Pompeo to meet Saudi king over Khashoggi

The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation's Facebook statement about the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Turkish officials say they believe he was murdered there and his body removed.

After an initial silence, Riyadh said Khashoggi had left the consulate safely and then at the weekend denied as "baseless" claims that orders were given to have him killed.

Cengiz said she waited outside the consulate for hours but Khashoggi never came out.

Late Sunday, King Salman spoke on the telephone with President Erdoğan about Khashoggi.

"The king firmly denied any knowledge of it", Trump told reporters, saying he didn't "want to get into [Salman's] mind", but said: "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been "rogue killers". The network cited two anonymous sources, one of whom cautioned the report could change.

While the search was being carried out on Tuesday, CNN and the New York Times reported that Saudi Arabia was preparing to acknowledge Khashoggi's death in a botched interrogation.

If Riyadh goes public with its new explanation, it would require a reversal of its previous claim that Khashoggi had left the consulate alive.

Benchmark Brent crude is trading at around 80 dollars a barrel and Mr Trump has criticised Opec and Saudi Arabia over rising prices.

Before Monday Trump had focused less on possible explanations for Khashoggi's likely demise than on possible punishment if the Saudis were found culpable. In statements after the call, both praised the creation of a joint Saudi-Turkish probe. An investment conference seen as a platform for the crown prince and dubbed the "Davos in the Desert" which was scheduled to take place in Riyadh next week, has been hit by a string of prominent cancellations.

In final remarks on Monday, North Korea struck a sour note, with Ri blaming Seoul for hurdles in implementing their pacts. The UNC has jurisdiction over the JSA, where South and North Korean forces stand face to face.

"The strong moral and legal responsibility which our father instilled in us obliges us to call for the establishment of an independent and impartial global commission to inquire into the circumstances of his death", the family said.

The Saudi government's Center for International Communication didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. These issues are long-running and stem-at least at a strategic level-from Saudi Arabia's concern over Turkey's push to reassert itself, at the Saudis expense, as the primary geopolitical leader of the Islamic world. And even though Erdogan is working to assume autocratic powers, he still attempts to present himself and Turkey as a viable and more vibrant alternative to the Saudi royal family's leadership.

Khashoggi went missing after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month.

Manchester United did not comment on Monday night about reports that Saudi Arabia is interested in buying the club.

Reuters and Associated Press journalists observed the cleaning crew carrying buckets, mops, cases of trash bags, cleaning solution, bleach, and two cases of milk through the front door of the consulate shortly before Turkish investigators were to inspect the building for evidence in the Khashoggi disappearance.

The disappearance of a Saudi columnist for the Washington Post has erupted into a diplomatic dispute, and potentially an economic one.

"I heard that report, but nobody knows if it's an official report", Trump told reporters, without elaborating. At least some of them appear to have high-level connections in the Saudi government.
