A red-hot start from LeBron James wasn't enough to secure the flawless start to his career as a Laker.

The LeBron James-led Los Angeles Lakers will face the tough task of deciding whether to contend for a title this season or give their young core the on-court experience they need to develop as players, NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said on Thursday.

"I'll tell you, when Jeanie Buss came to me and said: 'I really want to go after [LeBron],' I said: 'Jeanie, he's not coming here until you clean up this s- here.'" Bryant told The Undefeated, when asked how involved he was in securing the James deal.

LeBron James made his debut on the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2018. "I liked the way we shared the ball as well", James said. "It takes a while to get to where you can close your eyes and know exactly where your guys are".

Hate crimes: Rise in offences linked to religious beliefs
In another step outlined in the blueprint, taxi drivers and door staff will be given guidance on spotting hate crime. Ageism and hatred of certain alternative cultures, such as Goths or punks, could also be included in future.

James signed a mega four-year contract with the Lakers after calling time on his second spell with the Cleveland Cavaliers and entering free agency. "They are not going to beat Golden State or Houston", he said.

Three-time National Basketball Association champion James scored 26 points - the second most by a Lakers debutant - in his first regular season game since leaving hometown team the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time in the summer.

He played with the Heat from 2010-2014, winning two championships there.

With the Lakers up 6-2 after baskets by Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee and Brandon Ingram, James stole the ball from Portland forward Jake Layman and raced to the other end for a dunk.
