Trump offers ‘rogue killers’ theory, sends Pompeo to Saudi Arabia

He went into self-imposed exile in the United States following the ascension of Prince Mohammed, now next in line to succeed his father, the 82-year-old King Salman.

A Saudi delegation arrived in Turkey on Friday to discuss the case with Turkish authorities, following a Turkish presidential spokesperson's announcement that a joint Turkish-Saudi investigation team would be formed upon the kingdom's request.

But it remained unclear what evidence would remain almost two weeks after Khashoggi's disappearance.

Further, a team of cleaners were reported to have entered the consulate on Monday lunchtime - "causing a minor flurry of excitement", according to one reporter - hours before the search team showed up at the building.

The Turkish government has also told the Trump administration that it possesses audio recordings of what occurred inside the consulate that day - evidence that USA officials said supports the conclusion that Khashoggi was interrogated, tortured and then murdered.

Turkish officials allege Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi regime living in the US, was killed in the compound. Democratic lawmakers criticized the President for his comments after the call with King Salman.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency said Pompeo was expected in Turkey on Wednesday to meet Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, after talks in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia has denied the allegations.

"Just spoke with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia who totally denied any knowledge of what took place in their Turkish Consulate", Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump despatched Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the kingdom for what the State Department described as "face to face meetings with the Saudi leadership" to find out what happened.

However, given the close political and economic links between the United States and Saudi Arabia it remains unclear what action he could take.

"His denial to me could not have been stronger", Trump said.

Speaking to reporters as he set off for Florida from the White House, President Trump said he did not "want to get" into King Salman's mind, but added: "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers". Senators from both political parties have called for sanctions against Saudis responsible for Khashoggi's disappearance.

Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, also called for transparent cooperation between the two affected nations.
