Elon Musk attends the premiere and Q&A for "Do You Trust This Computer?" at The Regency Village Theatre in Westwood on April 5, 2018.

In subsequent tweets Musk said there would be an opening event on the night of December 10 and free rides for the public the next day. Steve Kuzj reports for the KTLA 5 News at 10 on October 21, 218.

CEO Elon Musk, better known for leading SpaceX and Tesla Motors, said on Twitter Sunday that the first test tunnel for his underground "loop" transit concept "is nearly done" and that a special event on December 10 will be followed by free rides in the tunnel at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, Calif.

Through his tunnel-digging firm, the Boring Company, Musk envisions the construction of a zero-emissions underground transit system that transports people using high-speed electric sleds.

The Test Tunnel, as it's called, is the first leg of Musk's underground tunnel system located underneath the streets of Hawthorne, California.

The Boring Company initially started off as a joke on Twitter while Musk was stuck in a traffic jam in Los Angeles.

Supporters of the technology have discussed a vision where a trip between Los Angeles might take 30 minutes instead of five or six hours.

Privately held Boring Co has been promoting its plans for tunnels that would allow high-speed travel between cities.

"Dec 10 in real time or Elon time?" one Twitter user asked Musk about the test tunnel unveiling.
