Clash erupts during Israel operation in Gaza

The Israeli military announced in a statement that the aerial assaults were carried out shortly after the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement fired an intense barrage of rockets against settlements in the southern part of the occupied territories, triggering air sirens. Three other buildings believed to be connected to Hamas were destroyed, it said.

In airstrikes late Monday, Israeli fighter jets tried to wipe the Hamas-run TV station in Gaza off the map.

He said the army had so far hit more than 30 targets belonging to Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Qassam members discovered the vehicle and chased it, prompting Israeli airstrikes that killed several people, the group said.

Nour Baraka, a local Hamas leader, was "assassinated", the statement said.

"An independent probe into the atrocious Israeli crimes should be declared right now, and Hamas is ready to provide all proof of the Israeli crimes against humanity", the group said late Monday, calling on the United Nations to indict Israel in the International Criminal Court.

The rocket fire was triggered by a botched Israeli raid in Gaza on Sunday.

Violence has flared between Israel and Gaza, a day after seven militants and an Israeli soldier were killed amid an undercover Israeli operation in Gaza.

"The Israeli army was meant to commit a silent operation in Gaza and not leave any impact of it, only to befuddle the unity of Palestinian street, but the operation failed", Mr Aldejani said.

But by today, thick plumes of smoke were rising above Gaza and southern Israel.

"The (Palestinian factions) agreed to hold fire to give Egyptian efforts to end Israeli aggression a chance, but the factions will respond to every Israeli attack", the official said.

On Sunday, Netanyahu defended his decision to allow through the Qatari cash to Gaza as a way to avert an "unnecessary war", maintain quiet for residents of southern Israel and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the impoverished Gaza Strip.

IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said: "An IDF special force operated tonight in a very meaningful operation to Israel's security".
