Macau GP horror-smash teen recovering after operation

"Also a special thanks to Dr. Riccardo Ceccarelli and last but not least my Team Van Amersfoort Racing, Facu and Ferdinand, who all suffer with me - you are phenomenal".

In an operation that lasted almost 10 hours, contradicting earlier reports, bone from the teenager's hip was used to help fix the vertebrae in her back.

The Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee's chief medical officer Dr Chan Wai-sin said Floersch was conscious and that her vital signs were stable when she was transferred to hospital.

Floersch's father backed his daughter's desire to continue racing and said that he wouldn't stand in the way of her decision.

Fears loomed she could be paralysed in the horrific accident - but it appears doctors have saved the teen driver.

Her team principal said on Monday that the surgery went "extremely well" and there is "no fear of paralysis".

"She was admitted for surgery at 10am (0200 GMT)", a press spokesman for Macau's health authority told AFP, saying that surgery was still ongoing into Monday afternoon. On the straightaway before the tight right turn, Flörsch had lost control of her auto in another incident, and as it slid out of control, it hit Tsuboi's auto as it negotiated the turn, sending Flörsch's vehicle airborne.

"I am sitting at her side now and she's just happy the surgery is done".

"Thanks everybody for the supporting messages".

Floersch, Tsuboi, two photographers and a marshall were all injured in the crash.

Frits van Amersfoort, the owner of Van Amersfoort Racing, has said she could have been killed in the crash if she had struck the barrier. The marshal suffered a broken jaw and a second individual had abdominal pain from a lacerated liver, according to medical reports the Macau GP sent to AFP.

"We will monitor the situation and make the necessary conclusions". I haven't seen all accidents in motorsport but this was surely one of the worst I've ever seen.

The Formula Three World Cup race was stopped for around an hour while the safety fencing was repaired, before Red Bull junior Dan Ticktum went on to seal victory.

Crashes are frequent at the Macau Grand Prix, which this year hosted six auto and motorcycle races on the 6.2-kilometre Guia Circuit around the streets of the island.
